Shahsavan Soumak Horse Cover — Azerbaijan, 1907
A distinctive Shahsavan horse cover woven in the Soumak technique, featuring a rich brick-red ground decorated with delicate stylised floral motifs and striking horizontal bands of geometric designs dividing camel, horse and other animal motif forms. The repeated motifs, varied colours and intricate borders create a wonderfully rhythmic composition, characteristic of traditional tribal weaving. 


Dated 1324 (1907), this fascinating example is documented in Karl Claus’s book Schmuckpferdedecken (2000), plate 15.
