Antique Peking Rug | Circa 1900
A beautifully preserved example with rare deep-blue field and classical Chinese auspicious motifs. This exceptional antique Peking rug, woven around 1900, showcases the serene refinement and symbolic artistry characteristic of the best Chinese workshop weaving from the late Qing period. The rug features a rich, saturated blue field, softly striated from age and handspun wool, creating a deep, calming visual presence.
Scattered elegantly across the open field are auspicious Chinese motifs—including censers, scholar’s objects, altar vessels, and ceremonial symbols—each rendered in warm tones of ivory, camel, caramel, and soft indigo. These floating emblems give the rug a sense of balance and spaciousness while maintaining the dignified simplicity that Peking rugs are celebrated for.
The border is particularly striking, with alternating roundels containing Chinese characters and coin motifs, interspersed with floral and leafy elements. The outer frame’s palette of sky blue, ivory, copper brown, and midnight blue provides a beautiful harmony with the central field while adding visual richness without overwhelming the design.
Woven in a dense, velvety wool pile, this piece remains in excellent condition for its age, retaining both structural strength and crisp clarity in its motifs. Its elegance and restraint make it highly versatile—equally suitable for classic interiors, minimalist spaces, or rooms seeking a touch of East Asian refinement.
A superb and authentic antique Peking rug, ideal for collectors, designers, or anyone seeking a timeless decorative textile with cultural depth and quiet sophistication.
