Ning Xia Sitting Rug
72 x 69 cm (2' 4" x 2' 3")
China, ca. 1920
Warp: cotton, weft: cotton, pile: wool
A charming and well-preserved Ningxia sitting rug from early 20th century China, dating to around 1920. Compact in scale, it features a bold central medallion set against a warm terracotta field, framed by deep indigo and soft yellow borders. The design draws on traditional Chinese motifs, rendered with a pleasing balance of symmetry and fluid ornament.
Woven in wool on a cotton foundation, the rug retains a full, soft pile, giving it a tactile richness and depth of colour. Subtle signs of use at the ends speak to its age and authenticity, without detracting from its overall presentation.
A characterful piece, equally suited as a decorative accent or functional seat cover, carrying the quiet elegance typical of Ningxia weaving traditions.
