This antique Baluch tribal rug was handwoven in Persia in the early 20th century and is a finely balanced example of traditional Baluch village and nomadic weaving. The rug displays the quiet strength and detailed geometric structure that defines many of the most appealing Baluch textiles.
The field is composed of a repeating lattice of diamond-shaped guls, arranged in an orderly, almost architectural formation. These motifs are executed in warm madder reds and aubergine tones set against a rich indigo ground, creating a striking yet harmonious contrast. The clarity of the drawing and confident use of colour give the rug a strong visual rhythm while retaining the subtle irregularities that reveal its entirely handwoven origin.
Framing the field is a series of borders featuring small geometric motifs and stylised tribal elements, providing both visual containment and decorative complexity. The use of ivory guard borders adds brightness and helps define the overall composition, a characteristic detail often found in well-balanced Baluch rugs.
The rug is woven entirely in wool, with wool warp, weft, and pile. The hand-spun wool gives the surface a soft, tactile quality while allowing gentle tonal variation throughout the design. The natural dyes have matured beautifully, producing deep, settled colours that are particularly associated with early Baluch weaving.
The proportions of the rug are typical of Baluch work and make it highly versatile. It works well as a small room rug, beside a bed, in an entrance area, or as an accent textile layered within a larger interior.
The condition is very good for its age, with mostly good pile remaining and only light signs of use consistent with a carefully preserved antique tribal textile. Both decorative and functional, the rug remains suitable for everyday use.
This piece represents a characterful and authentic example of early 20th-century Baluch weaving, combining refined colour, strong geometry, and the individuality that makes tribal rugs so enduring.
