This antique Veramin khorjin is a beautifully preserved example of late 19th-century Persian tribal weaving, dated on the reverse to 1297 AH (1879). Originally woven as a functional saddlebag for transport and storage by nomadic or village communities, pieces such as this offer an intimate glimpse into the daily life and artistic expression of tribal weaving traditions.

The khorjin retains both bag faces connected by the original central bridge panel, preserving its complete utilitarian structure. This intact format is particularly appealing, allowing the textile to be appreciated not only as a decorative object but also as a historical artifact reflecting its original purpose.

Each face is centred around a square ivory-ground panel containing stylised geometric floral motifs arranged in a structured, almost architectural composition. These motifs are framed by richly patterned borders incorporating small-scale tribal elements, lattice structures, and rhythmic geometric ornamentation. The drawing shows the confident clarity associated with Veramin weaving, while subtle irregularities reveal the entirely handwoven nature of the piece.

The colour palette is especially striking, combining madder reds, soft turquoise and indigo blues, warm ivory, and darker tonal accents. The use of natural dyes has matured beautifully over time, producing gentle variations in tone that enhance the textile’s depth and character.

The connecting bridge panel features alternating blocks of colour and small floral motifs, adding further visual interest while highlighting the original functional design of the saddlebag. This structural element gives the piece a distinctive rhythm and reinforces its authenticity as a working tribal textile.

The khorjin is woven entirely in wool, including warp, weft, and pile, creating a soft yet durable textile with a lively tactile quality. The condition is good for a piece of this age, with areas of lower pile, minor small repairs, and light signs of use that are consistent with its utilitarian history and contribute to its sense of authenticity.

Dating from the late 19th century, this khorjin represents a rare and evocative example of Veramin weaving. Textiles of this type are valued not only for their decorative beauty but also for their cultural and historical significance.

Today, such pieces are highly versatile and can be displayed as wall hangings, draped over furniture, or appreciated as collectible study textiles.
